10% pay raise at Austin State Supported Living Center

Direct care pay hike is a pilot project Officials at the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services have announced a pilot project that will increase pay for direct care staff at Austin SSLC by 10%. The plan is an attempt to remedy acute staffing shortages and high turnover. DADS officials gave a figure of 68% for direct care staff annual turnover at Austin SSLC.

Monitor reports note staff shortages

Reports by independent monitors are part of the settlement agreement with the U.S. Dept. of Justice related to services and conditions in Texas’ state supported living centers (formerly state schools) for individuals with severe or profound developmental disabilities. Monitors’ reports have been issued for Corpus Christi, El Paso, Brenham, San Antonio, Rio Grande (Harlingen), Abilene, and Lubbock state supported living centers. The reports for Lubbock and San Antonio specifically mention severe problems due to low staffing levels and high staff turnover.

Reports can be found on the page of this website

About these reports: in 2006 Texas and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) settled a lawsuit filed by the DOJ related to conditions in what were then known as state schools. Part of the settlement agreement calls for regular reviews of the facilities by monitors who were selected by the State of Texas and the DOJ.
