Health
care reform NOW!
_____
There is broad agreement that
the health care system in our country is profoundly dysfunctional. The
World Health Organization ranks the United States 37th among the nations
of the world in delivering quality care, despite our spending double the
amount per capita that Japan, Canada, and European nations spend on health
care. When it comes to infant mortality, we’re 44th in the world,
far behind all other advanced economies. Our current system is the most
expensive in the world, consuming 16 percent of our gross national product.
There are 46.6 million of our people, including 5.4 million Texans (25%),
who have no health coverage.
_____
The
growing number of Americans who are fed up with this situation might be
nearing the critical mass that could lead to real reforms.

Texas
coalition proposes universal affordable health care
In Texas, Health
Care for all Texas, a grassroots coalition of community groups that
believes health care is a right, has released its Texas Insurance Plan
(TIP). The plan is a detailed proposal to provide coverage for all Texans
by realigning funding & provider reimbursement structures.
Our national union (CWA)
mobilizes for universal health care
In
February our national organization, the Communications Workers of America,
announced our “Better Health Care Together” campaign, which
will work with other groups to meet a goal of guaranteed universal health
care by 2012.
